Clinton shedding staff

In what looks like a big change, Hillary Clinton's campaign is shedding staff.  Politico reports:

Members of Hillary Clinton's advance staff received calls and emails this evening from headquarters summoning them to New York City Tuesday night, and telling them their roles on the campaign are ending, two Clinton staffers tell my colleague Amie Parnes.

The advance staffers -- most of them now in Puerto Rico, South Dakota, and Montana -- are being given the options of going to New York for a final day Tuesday, or going home, the aides said. The move is a sign that the campaign is beginning to shed -- at least -- some of its staff. The advance staff is responsible for arranging the candidate's events around the country.

With the future of her campaign in doubt, Clinton hasn't announced her plans for the final election night of the primary cycle or beyond, but the aides said she would stage her election night event in New York City. Her entourage is currently expected to wake up Tuesday in New York and to arrive in Washington, D.C. Tuesday night.

I don't think it's clear what this means.  These are advance staff.  So it could be that Senator Clinton is not planning on having events around the country for which she would need advance staff.

Not traveling will save a lot of money. And Clinton could still speak in places like think tanks or the National Press Club, places that would handle the event planning and much of the logistics.

This step is consistent with

  1. Ending the campaign
  2. Suspending the campaign
  3. Taking a breather for a week or so to see what the remaining superdelegates do.

What do you think is going on?

Re: Clinton shedding staff (2.00 / 1)

'Advance staff' well that prehaps can be easily explained by the fact that there are no more primaries after SD and MT. She won't need them.

That doesn't mean that she won't continue over the summer.

Look instead if those staffers join the Obama campaign. The best ones will be poached.

What is her movements in NYC in the coming week.

I'm under, no illusions when it comes to them. Always prepare for the worst.

Re: Clinton shedding staff (none / 0)

Advance staff is used in the general election, too.  And nobody takes the summer off (would you want any Democratic candidate to do so?).  This is winding down, so to say.  Cheers to Clinton for one tough fight.

You don't get rid of your advance team during... (2.00 / 1)

...a primary...

...unless you don't intend to run in the general election.

Re: Clinton shedding staff (none / 0)

Well,

What exactly does Hillary Clinton expect to do? She has little to know general election campaign staff. She has no money to even begin to build one. So why keep an advance staff?

I think this is a sign that she is suspending her campaign... even though she has no money to mount a general election campaign.

From The Page:

"On NBC's "Today": Andrea Mitchell said "top Senators" plan to endorse Obama some time after Tuesday's primaries, and Clinton is deciding whether to concede by midweek. Russert said, "this race will be over Wednesday morning."

On ABC's "Good Morning America"
Stephanopoulos said Clinton will not concede until Obama reaches the 2,118 "magic number," and Obama staffers are now reaching out to Clinton staffers.

Vilsak says Obama will b the nominee (2.00 / 2)

"Vilsack Throws in the Towel

The former Iowa governor and a national co-chairman of Clinton's campaign tells the AP Sunday:

"It does appear to be pretty clear that Senator Obama is going to be the nominee. After Tuesday's contests, she needs to acknowledge that he's going to be the nominee and quickly get behind him."

Re: Clinton shedding staff (2.00 / 1)

Clinton will want to hold onto the base and influence she has built up. The only way to do that is to get behind the winner of the party's primary and campaign like hell for him.

I expect to see Hillary at an Obama event making her endorsement. The media will go wild and the focus will shift to McCain. Hillary will go forward as a force to be reckoned with a huge base of support in the party and with all her options open.

If she fights on she will immediately lose the support of a majority of her SD's (many like Vilsack and Corzine have publicly stated they would support the candidates who first crossed the threshold) she will go from fighter to sore loser in the media narrative and her political career will be finished.
